Well after after 25 years at this game,
this the first year we haven't picked any Chardonnay or Schubert. After 450
mm of rain in November and December, followed by
more than usual thunderstorm activity in January and February, our organic
approach
to fungicide applications simply wasn't enough to cope with the pressure.
We did, however keeep taking the next step, and wouldn't you know, the rain
stopped in March. It really hasn't re-started to date, so it looks like the
seasons are turning on their head once again. At least the Riesling and Shiraz
did the right thing for us, and the Cabernet Sauvignon looks pretty special
in the cellar. We also have a delicious Malbec and Merlot Noir from 2008,
so all was not lost. Vintage commenced with a rush in late February with the
Pinot Noir and then wandered along really until the second week in April when
the remaining Shiraz came off. We have tried for a late harvest Riesling this
year, and that small parcel (500 litres) was picked in the first week of
June. It remains to be seen if it will see the lights of any dining tables
or simply add to the Bloodwood environmental flow.
